Computer software is a general term that describes computer programs.  Software consists of lines of code written by computer programmers that have been compiled into a computer program. Software programs are stored as binary data that is copied to a computer's hard drive, when it is installed. Since software is virtual and does not take up any physical space, it is much easier (and often cheaper) to upgrade than computer hardware.

Word Processing - Processes words, paragraphs, pages, and even entire papers. Example : Microsoft Word

Desktop Publishing - This refers to any time you use a computer to make a printable document. It is used to create books and magazines.

Computer data is information processed or stored by a computer. This information may be in the form of text documents, images, audio clips, software programs, or other types of data. Computer data may be processed by the computer's CPU and is stored in files and folders on the computer's hard disk.

Any device that provides input to a computer. Like a keyboard or a mouse.

Any device that outputs information from a computer is called, not surprisingly, an output device. Since most information from a computer is output in either a visual or auditory format, the most common output devices are the monitor and speakers.

A desktop computer (or desktop PC) is a computer that is designed to stay in a single location.

Laptop computers, also known as notebooks, are portable computers that you can take with you and use in different environments.

Very small, lightweight device (such as the Palm Pilot) which provides functionality approaching that of a laptop computer. Features of modern handhelds include calendar and diary organizing, word processing, data management, remote access to firm's network, internet access, wireless access, messaging, etc. Also called personal digital assistant (PDA).

A tablet, or tablet PC, is a portable computer that uses a touchscreen as its primary input device.

An application, or application program, is a software program that runs on your computer. Web browsers, e-mail programs, word processors, games, and utilities are all applications. The word "application" is used because each program has a specific application for the user. For example, a word processor can help a student create a research paper, while a video game can prevent the student from getting the paper done.

It is the bar that spans the bottom of the screen and contains the Start button on the left side and the systray on the right. The task bar also includes the current time on the far right side and can hold shortcuts to programs directly to the right of the Start button.

Windows with a capital 'W' refers to Microsoft Windows which is the most popular operating system for personal computers.

Windows with a lowercase 'w' refers to an area on the screen that displays information for a specific program.  A typical window includes a title bar along the top that describes the contents of the window, followed by a toolbar that contains user interface buttons.

The term "hard drive" is actually short for "hard disk drive." The term "hard disk" refers to the actual disks inside the drive. However, all three of these terms are usually seen as referring to the same thing -- the place where your data is stored.
