1. Talk
Talking puts into practice everything you have learned. Mark Manson says that one hour of conversation (with people who speak the language you are learning) is enough to know the same as 5 hours of taking classes or 10 hours on your own. The conversation is a complex process that involves listening to the other person speaking, understanding what they are saying, planning the response in your mind, and then expressing it orally. Remember that language is something that needs to be processed, not memorized.
2. Practice in your mind
As we mentioned before, language is processed in our minds. Every moment we are thinking about a new idea, remembering some moment of our life, or planning things we have to do in the future. It is usually done in our native language, but why not force our brain to think in English (or the language of your choice). Forming sentences in another language and designing responses to different situations will prepare us for when they arrive.
3. Start with the simplest
In each language, there are, perhaps, between 50 and 100 essential words. These 100 most common words are equivalent to 50% of the spoken communication a person uses daily. Under this condition, making gradual and truly significant progress in learning a new language is possible, just by starting with the most obvious and moving gradually towards the complex. But remember, consistency is something fundamental that you must take into account.
4. Carry a small dictionary with you
No matter how hard we try, it is a fact that learning all the words used in another language is not easy. So, to help you a little, try to have a dictionary at hand every time you hear or read a word you don't know. You don't have to carry around a big book, nowadays the wonder of smartphones can make you have everything you need with just one touch.
5. Listen and read
Practice makes perfect. But, so as not to make your learning a boring and tedious process, use every opportunity you have to introduce the new language to your daily life. For example, you can watch more movies with subtitles, listen to music, search for lyrics, read the news in another language, and listen to podcasts or audiobooks. Some even say that a very effective method is to label all the objects in your house with their respective names in the language you are learning. It will help you learn a lot of vocabulary.
6. Use technology
A straightforward trick is to change your mobile and your computer's language to the language you want to learn, so every time you use them -and we use them a lot- you will be practicing and learning. You can also install some dictionary applications, pronunciation applications, or some services to learn languages that we had mentioned initially because to make learning more fun. They also have mobile applications that use gamification.
7. Make new friends
Interacting in a real way with the language is very important, especially when you do it with other native speakers. Because from them, you can also learn to express your thoughts correctly and some everyday expressions that are never well known with dictionaries; and the proper pronunciation for each word or phrase. In addition to making new friends, both of you can benefit from teaching or learning a different language.
