A couple of weeks ago I watched Me, Myself & Irene on TV. A really funny one. Especially the three sons of Jim Carrey. The film is about a policeman named Charlie who, after years of continuously suppressing his rage and feelings, suffers a psychotic breakdown which results in a second personality, Hank.

Why do I write about that?

In the last 3 years since CoboCards exists, we acted almost the same way. Thanks to God we didn’t have a lot of cases where we really had to suppress our feelings. Whenever we faced an issue we took a deep breath, cooled down and tried to react afterwards. Unfortunately in the past few weeks these negative issues came up more frequently.

User who didn’t pay their bills and started to threaten us with bad articles in their blogs, user critizising us that our iPhone App would not work with an IOS version of Apple (IOS5) which isn’t released yet (jailbreaked version) or developers who didn’t fulfill their contracts. All this made me feel: GRRRR!!

But I always tried to stay calm and find a solution without starting to hurt people. I decided to write this blogpost in order not to end up like Jim Carrey. I hope you can understand that. If anyone of our users should feel offended by this (99% do appreciate our work and we appreciate them as user/customer), please accept my apologies.

Vor einigen Wochen schaute ich mir den Film Ich, beide & Sie mit Jim Carrey im Fernsehen an. Ich finde den lustig. Gerade die 3 Söhne von ihm. Der Polizist Charlie (Jim Carrey) erlebt einige Schicksalschläge, die er in sich hineinfrisst. Mitmenschen nutzen seine Gutmütigkeit aus bis er einen Zusammenbruch erlebt. Seitdem leidet er unter einer gespaltenen Persönlichkeit. Sein zweites Ich (Hank) erwacht aus dem Tiefschlaf.

Warum erzähle ich Euch das jetzt?

In den letzten 3 Jahren, seitdem CoboCards nun existiert, haben wir ungefähr genauso gehandelt. Immer mal Verärgerung über eine ungerechte Behandlung heruntergeschluckt. Gott sei Dank gab es nicht all zu viele Ereignisse, in denen ich das tun musste. Aber in den letzten Wochen öfter, so dass sich da etwas angestaut hat.

User, die die Pro-Version nutzen wollen, obne dafür wie Andere zu bezahlen und dann mit bösen Blogartikeln drohen, wenn man sie daran erinnert. User, die sich im Forum und über Twitter über unseren Support aufregen, weil wir für eine noch nicht veröffentlichte Version von IOS5 (bisher nur gejailbreaked) noch keinen Support anbieten oder Entwickler, die uns 6 Monate hinhalten, ohne ein Ergebnis abzuliefern. All this makes me feel: GRRRR!

Dabei kann ich mich nicht erinnern, dass wir für eine begründete Supportanfrage (ob sie über unser Forum, über Twitter, Blog, E-Mail, Feedbackformular oder sonstiges reinkam) länger als 24 Stunden für die Beantwortung gebraucht hätten.

Dennoch bin ich auch in diesen Fällen ruhig geblieben, auch wenn es schwer fiel. Ich beschloss diesen Blogbeitrag zu schreiben, um etwas Dampf abzulassen, um nicht wie Jim Carrey zu enden. Ich hoffe, Ihr könnt das vestehen; bin auch nur ein Mensch. 🙂 Sollte sich dennoch jemand dadurch angegriffen fühlen (und 99% unser User brauchen das nicht), so bitte ich um Entschuldigung!

Es ist Sommer! Die Sonne lacht, Vögel zwitschern und Preise fallen. Während andere die warmen Sonnenstrahlen auskosten, müssen andere lernen. Mit unserer Sommeraktion versuchen wir etwas das Leiden zu lindern 🙂

It’s summer in Europe. The sun shines, the weather is fantastic and prices drop. While others enjoy the nice weather and have fun, some others have to learn. Therefore we drop the price of our iPhone App in order to allay pain 🙂

Es ist wieder etwas Zeit ins Land gegangen seit unserer letzten Statusmeldung über die Smartphone Apps. Also hier noch einmal ein kurzes Update über den Stand der Dinge.

CoboCards Android Karteikarten App:

Wir nähern uns allmählich der Beta-Test Phase. Fast alle Funktionnen sind soweit entwickelt. In der Beta-Phase wird die App noch einmal auf Herz und Niere intensiv getestet. Sollten Fehler oder neue Änderungswünsche auftreten, so werden diese noch umgesetzt. Wenn nicht, kann die App sofort in den Google Marketplace.

CoboCards iPhone Karteikarten App

Leider sind die Nachrichten bei der iPhone App nicht so erfreulich. Nach langem Hin und Her mussten wir nun unsere Wege mit unserem Entwickler trennen. Zu behebig ging die Entwicklung voran. Leider sind unsere iPhone App-Nutzer die Leidtragenden. Sie müssen noch etwas auf die 2. Version warten, da wir den Prozess quasi neu beginnen müssen. Wir sind jedoch schon in Verhandlungen mit einer weiteren Entwicklungsfirma und haben berechtigte Hoffnung, dass auch die iPhone App 2.0 in absehbarer Zeit im App Store sein wird.

Update 28/06/2011: Heute Einigung mit neuer Firma erzielt. Es geht voran!

It is a while ago since we posted an update on the status of the development of our smartphone apps version 2.0. Here’s the last status quo.

CoboCards Android App:

We are approaching the Beta-Test Phase. Almost all features are developed. In the Beta-Phase we will test the app intensively. Bugs and enhancements will be done. If completed, the app will immediately be put into the Google Marketplace.

CoboCards iPhone App

Unfortunatey no good news regarding our iPhone App 2.0. After long discussions we decided to stop our partnership with our IOS developer. No progress in development made us think about a different attitude. Our iPhone App user will have to wait a bit more to use the 2nd versioin. But we already started to negotiate with another external company. Hopefully we will be able to present something within this year.

Update: 2011-06-28: Today new contract was signed with software company.

We will restrict the following 2 features of the Free Version starting on the 1st of July 2011.

1. The nummber of free flashcard sets will be reduced from 3 to 2
2. Printing is no longer available for  Free User

Those of you (Free User) who have 3 sets in their accounts will be asked to archive a set (can be re-activated as Pro User) or to export (XML/CSV) and then to delete.

Affected users will ask: Why that?
Well, we think the difference between the Free and the Pro Version is not sufficient enough. Our platform can only exist if the difference between them is obvious.

Three possible reactions on that from your side:

1. What the hell are they doing? Don’t like these changes. I need to print. Hence, I will write old-sytle paper flashcards again.
2. Grrr. CoboCards is really cool. But paying money for it? Too much for me.
3. Yeah, I can understand them. And I am already Pro User:)

Re reaction 1:
Really pity! Electronically made flashcards and the ability to browse even archived flashcards is a great advanctage. We would be happy if you change your mind. But we have to do the restriction.

Thank you very much for your sympathy. With your support we made it until today. Running costs and further development can only be achieved if CoboCards generates income.

If you should ask yourself: Why don’t they put ads into the app and let others pay for CoboCards?Well, if we really would think about it we would put ads next to every button and corner you would see. That would make CoboCards look ugly. We don’t want CoboCards look ugly. And you?
